BARKS:
|
It has come and gone. JT, Gary, Greg and I were there most of the day. We had a chance to say hello to some of our club members and friends from other clubs. There were some good deals here and there.
A little bit of gossip: I found out that the reason for the last minute date change for the BARKS SwapMeet was that there was a scheduling mistake by the organizers and when they realized the problem a dog show was already scheduled. Sooo! We lost to the dogs.
A little bit of good news:

House Passes Four-Year FAA Funding Bill
|
Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, H.R. 658. In passing the Bill the House adopted a provision presented by the joint Conference Committee aimed at protecting model aviation from burdensome regulation.
This would never have been possible if it wasn't for the efforts and support of Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla) in introducing an amendment protecting model aviation into the Senate version of the Bill. And, it would never have been possible without you, the AMA member, in your response to AMA's call to action during last spring's Congressional Awareness campaign.
Passage by the House is but the first step in the final process of bringing this bill to life. The Senate will take up the Bill on Monday, 2/6, with a final vote expected by the end of the day. Though this is not yet a done deal, there is every reason to believe the Senate will pass the Bill and send it to the President for signature.
So, there you have it!

Gyro's in fixed wing aircraft
|
Hello Guys:
I have been experimenting with cheap helicopter gyros ($12) in airplanes recently with some success with a park zone Trojan. I installed one on the Rudder and found a great improvement in slow flight (my Favorite), the gyro will recover from a stall so quickly that all you will not notice the stall but will see a bobbing action as the gyro corrects. It also holds the line better in a loop or Roll. I liked this so much that I added another gyro to the roll axis(I'd say aelerons but I can't spell elarons), I flew on a windy day (15-20 mph winds) and The Trojan was just about as stable as JT's Senior in this wind.
The most common use of gyros in airplanes is to help keep the nose pointed down the runway on takeoff and landing with a these Squirrelly tail Dragger's. The correct way to takeoff with a tail dragger is to smoothly apply power and use up elevator to keep the tail wheel on the ground until You've got enough airspeed for the rudder to have effect, at this point release the up elevator and let the plane gain airspeed. Then give up elevator again for a beautiful scale take off.
OR use my method and give full Throttle and let the plane veer off in a random direction while hoping that if it veers it will go AWAY from the flight stands.
The gyro helps in both situations.
I've gotten many questions and I try to answer them But I have found an article by an expert that I thought you might like to read. The article seems to be several years old but the discussion of specific gyros seem to be current. It's all good info.

Hello Guys
I had mentioned to Greg today that we ought to be adding QR Codes to our flyers and whatnot. QR Codes are those blocky-looking barcodes you see on everything these days. I generated one for the RAMSRC.com website:

It's a .png file, which is an image file, like jpg or bmp. You can right click the above image and save it to your computer and just import it into whatever you want to import it into-- Word or whatever. You can even add it to your email signature in most email programs.
Once it is printed off on a flyer, someone with a smartphone can use a barcode reader application and their cellphone camera to scan the QR code and it will load up the web page that it represents into their browser. There is no need to modify the web site to use this. It's just a bar code representation of the URL for the web site.
For my Android phone I use a free app call "Barcode Scanner" (by ZXing) to scan QR codes. I just run the application, point the camera at a QR Code (even displayed on a monitor) and it pulls up the web page.
Here's where I generated the QR code above: http://www.qrstuff.com/
If we have special events we might make a page on the web site and generate a QR code that goes directly to that page that we print on the flyers. That page could have more current information than what the flyer has.
The band I was playing in a few months ago generated a QR code for their website and they printed out a couple of big copies of them and attached them to the PA speakers when we would play shows. People in the audience could use their smartphones to go right to the band web page and not even have to leave their seats.
It might be cool if we were to print up some decals of the QR code and we could stick them on trailers, cars or even our planes. Maybe stick one on the sign at the field entrance, or on the field rules sign...

Hi Guys
I found this web site with a bunch of flying events in NC that the club
might find useful:
